Because who wants to enjoy the beautiful colors of autumn leaves? Real nature is so messy, inconvenient. It’s not like admiring the changing seasons is a major big deal in Japanese cultural tradition. The other day I saw an older woman sweeping the sidewalk in front of her shop, but she wasn’t satisfied with getting rid of the already-fallen leaves. No, she took her broom and tried to preemptively knock down the leaves still on the tree. An old man said something to her as he walked by, but I couldn’t hear it. I hope it was sarcastic.
