  1. Yum! Everything looks so fresh and vibrantly colored! I’m not familiar with the item between the two tomatoes. It looks like asparagus at the tops but more like bamboo below the tops. What is it?

    • Those are bamboo shoots, but I have no idea why they look like that. I thought because they were so delicate I wouldn’t have to use rice bran in the water to boil them, but I was wrong, they were bitter and I had to boil them again in dashi. I won’t make that mistake again. Outside the farmer’s co-op there’s a little shack where a group of women fry things, it always smells go good. I want to slice up some onions, kabocha, green peppers and zuchini and tempura them together tonight. For some reason I like fried food more in summer than winter, when of course it’s hot enough without hot oil in the kitchen.
